These portraits blend the newly emerging voices of the 21st century with the avatars of our inescapable past, adding to the developing narrative of who “We the People” are. Beautiful brown and mestizo skin tones color the richly layered surface so thick with energy the paint becomes sculptural. Little by little, a past still recognizable in the elite, the royals, and the renowned begins to take on a new voice backdropped by the prideful colors celebrating our queerness. These are the portraits inspired by my community, our inner self, and our outer expression. They are the non-traditional, homo-sexual, non-binary, and the brown of our future that doesn’t seek to erase an oppressive past instead evolve past it in a way that speaks of inclusivity and equity.
